A note from the editors

Catania by Edward Lear.

Dear readers,

Welcome to The Marlowe Review.

The idea for this magazine stems from a desire to champion a type of travel writing, which, by and large, has disappeared from today’s popular literature. Travel writing, comes in many forms, from the guidebooks in duty-free, that we read on the airplane, to the aspirational magazines luring us to exotic and costly destinations. Quality, style and scope vary, but one essential requirement underpins contemporary travel writing; whether it is informative or inspirational, we expect it now to be useful -  be it for the choice of destination, recommended mode of travel, or hotels and restaurants.

The Marlowe Review was conceived as a platform to publish writing about discovery and experience that resists that expectation, that is, instead, discursive and narrative-driven, and focuses on first-hand acquaintance with places and people. The principal value of its writing is the story, whether it be insightful, personal, or anecdotal.

In short, The Marlowe Review is a place where you, the witness, can, without the criteria of commercial publishing demands, be free to pen your impressions of the ventures you take, and the connections you make a long the way.

Two tenets/principles of our platform, are unequivocal; we ask for quality, in writing and photography, and stories that evoke a sense of place.

Like any publication, this magazine will be defined by the work that it publishes, which we must let speak for itself. We publish a minimum of one new piece every other week and hope very much that you, dear readers, will engage with these pieces, find them enlightening and enjoyable, and become regular visitors to our pages.

Thank you,

The Editors
